Come and learn filmmaking with Solent Movie Makers — no experience needed, no membership required.
A Year-Round Programme of Sessions, Activities and Free Workshops
Throughout the year, we run a series of free filmmaking workshops covering a wide range of skills and techniques.
From scriptwriting and storyboarding to editing, camera work, transitions, and documentary making —
there’s something for everyone, whatever your experience level.
You don’t need any prior knowledge. You don’t need expensive equipment. Just turn up and get stuck in.
You’re Always Welcome
Our workshops sit alongside our regular Solent Movie Makers sessions, and you’re welcome to come along
to any of them — not just the workshops. Whether there’s a workshop running or not, you’ll find a friendly
group of filmmakers working on projects, sharing ideas, and helping each other improve.
You don’t need to be a member to attend. Come along, see what we do, and decide if it’s for you.
There’s no pressure and no obligation.
If you do decide to join, our membership fees are deliberately kept low to make filmmaking accessible to everyone.
What Kind of Workshops sessions and Activities Do We Run?
Our sessions cover a broad range of filmmaking topics. Here’s a taste of what we’ve covered and what’s coming up:
Facebook Reels & Short Social Media Content
Creating short vertical videos designed for social media — punchy storytelling and fast turnaround content.
Editing video on mobile phone and tablet
A hands-on tutorial covering transitions, effects, and building a clean edit on mobile or PC.
In-Camera Transitions
Creating dynamic transitions directly in-camera — whip-pans, movement transitions, and match cuts and many more. — then refining them in the edit. This is a fun session with lots of creativity.
Scene Variation Challenge
Recreating a short script using different filming constraints to explore creative choices and problem-solving.
Documentary: “Filming the Filmers”
One group makes a short film while another documents the process. A focus on observational storytelling.
Replicate a Movie Clip
Recreating a short film scene as accurately as possible — a practical exercise in framing, timing, and shot matching.
DaVinci Resolve Demonstration
A technical overview of the DaVinci Resolve editing software and professional workflow.
Scriptwriting & Storyboarding
The fundamentals of writing a script, creating a storyboard, and breaking it down for production.
The programme develops over time, but every session is open to newcomers.
You can learn an enormous amount simply by attending and getting involved.
